Frequently Asked Questions
Porcelain Tiles VS Ceramic Tiles
Porcelain Tiles – What makes them different?
Porcelain tiles are made from finer clays and fired at much higher temperatures. This makes them:
- Extremely dense and hard-wearing
- Very low water absorption (under 0.5%)
- Ideal for high-traffic areas like kitchens, hallways & commercial spaces
- Suitable for outdoors (frost-resistant porcelain)
- Highly resistant to stains, scratches & fading
Best for: Floors, bathrooms, kitchens, patios, underfloor heating, and busy households.
Ceramic Tiles – lighter and decorative
Ceramic tiles are made from coarser clay and fired at lower temperatures. They are:
- Lighter and easier to cut
- More affordable
- Glazed for colour and design
- Slightly more porous than porcelain
- Better suited to walls than floors
Best for: Bathroom walls, kitchen splashbacks, feature walls, and low-traffic areas.
Which Tile should you choose?
- Choose porcelain if you want durability, low maintenance, or outdoor use
- Choose ceramic if you want decorative wall tiles on a tighter budget

Below is our expert guide to the most popular porcelain tile finishes, all available through Majestic Tiles’ carefully selected ranges.
Polished Tile Finish
Polished tiles feature a high-gloss, reflective surface that enhances light and creates a luxury feel. Commonly used with marble-effect porcelain tiles, polished finishes are ideal for living rooms, dining areas, and feature walls. While visually striking, they offer lower slip resistance, so they are best avoided in wet areas.

Glossy Tile Finish
Glossy porcelain tiles feature a smooth, highly polished surface that reflects light beautifully, making rooms appear brighter and more spacious. This finish is ideal for bathroom walls, kitchen splashbacks, and feature walls, offering a clean, luxury look that is easy to maintain.
Best for: Living rooms, Bathroom, feature walls, low-traffic areas
Key Benefits: Luxury appearance, light reflection, smooth surface
Matt (Natural) Tile Finish
Matt finish tiles have a non-reflective, natural surface that provides excellent grip and practicality. Matt porcelain tiles are ideal for high-traffic areas.
Best for: Kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, commercial spaces
Key benefits: Slip resistance, easy cleaning, modern look

Satin / Silk Tile Finish
A satin or silk finish offers a soft sheen that sits between matt and polished. It delivers a refined appearance while maintaining better grip than a fully polished tile. This finish is perfect for customers wanting a modern, elegant look without compromising safety.
Best for: Open-plan living areas, bathrooms, walls
Key benefits: Subtle shine, balanced grip, contemporary style
Velvet Tile Finish
Velvet tiles have a soft, satin-like surface with a low sheen, combining elegance with practicality. This finish offers a refined look while providing better grip than glossy tiles, making it suitable for floors and walls in both residential and commercial spaces.
Best for: Living areas, bathrooms, open-plan floors
Key benefits: Subtle shine, balanced grip, contemporary style, low sheen floor tiles
Lappato (Semi-Polished) Tile Finish
Lappato tiles are partially polished, creating a surface with both matt and glossy sections. This produces a stylish, textured effect that reflects light subtly while remaining more practical than fully polished tiles. Lappato finishes are popular with large-format marble and stone-effect tiles.
Best for: Living areas, feature floors, luxury interiors
Key benefits: Soft reflection, premium finish, modern design
Structured / Textured Tile Finish
Textured tiles replicate the feel of natural stone, slate, or concrete, adding depth and realism. Their raised surface improves grip, making them suitable for bathrooms, wet rooms, and commercial environments. This finish is also widely used for wall feature tiles.
Best for: Bathrooms, wet rooms, feature walls
Key benefits: Enhanced grip, realistic texture, durability
Anti-Slip Tile Finish (R10, R11, R12)

What is Kerbside Tile Delivery in the UK?
Your tile order is delivered by a specialist pallet distribution courier to the nearest safe roadside location outside your property.
Due to the weight of porcelain and ceramic tiles, all orders are delivered kerbside only. It is the customer’s responsibility to move the tiles from the kerbside into their home, business, or building site.
The delivery driver may place the pallet on a driveway at their discretion, depending on vehicle access, surface condition, and health and safety requirements. This however cannot be guaranteed.

Damaged or Incorrect Items

We strongly recommend checking your delivery upon arrival before signing for it.
As a company, customer satisfaction is very important to us. If you have any concerns with your order, please contact us as soon as possible and we will do our best to make things right.
Please Note
We may offer end-of-run or clearance tiles at discounted prices. These items are sold on a non-returnable basis. This will be clearly highlighted prior to purchase and clearly stated on your invoice at the point of sale.
How many tiles should I order?
We always recommend ordering extra tiles to allow for cuts, wastage, and breakages during installation.
60 × 120 cm tiles – order an additional 20%
60 × 60 cm tiles – order an additional 10%
30 × 60 cm tiles – order an additional 10%
Your tiler will need to make cuts to fit edges, corners, and features, and while some cut tiles can be reused, having extra ensures the job can be completed without delays. Any unused tiles are also useful to keep as spares for future repairs or replacements.
If you already have a tiler this can be confirmed with them prior to purchase.
